The Lazy J Wildlife Reserve is the official location for iRescue®’s premier Costa Rica wildlife rescue center. We have four main programs that deal directly with the wildlife: Rescue, Rehabilitation, Release and Retirement.

Rescue

The first step in our program begins with the rescue of wildlife animals in Costa Rica. These animals are obtained as the result seizures carried out by officials from Conservation Areas SINAC (MINAE), animals that are handed over by private citizens or Police or Fireman who found them injured, orphaned or held as pets.

Upon rescue of each animal, it is delivered to the Lazy J Sanctuary located in in the southern zone in Costa Rica in the mountains above Pejibaye. This location was chosen due to its secluded nature, workable farmland and protected reserve. It has been proven to be the perfect location for our premier Costa Rica wildlife reserve facility.

Rehabilitation

Once the animal is delivered to our rescue center and deemed worthy for rehabilitation, a specific plan is derived. In our constant effort to provide the best care and utilize groundbreaking new methods of rehabilitation, our rehab specialists take pride in working with other rehab specialists and studying new methods of rehab from many professionals around the globe.

Birds with broken wings are guided through a process of healing and muscle strengthening. Monkeys that are electrocuted from power lines might need to learn how to climb trees again by retraining their neurological pathways through extensive brain exercises. Every day presents a new challenge to our team and every day we provide rehabilitation solutions for the wildlife of Costa Rica.

Release

Our goal is to nurture distressed animals back to health and reintroduce them into the wild. Each day we try and release as many animals back to the wild as possible. Some of the time, we receive animals that have only small injures and need only a few days to recuperate. Other cases are not so simple. Animals with extensive injures are treated appropriately but however might not recover completely or be left with a handicap that would not allow to function to their full capacity in the wild. Sadly almost all animals admitted to us that are domesticated are unable to be released back to the wild. At iRescue®, each animal that travels through our system of care is carefully evaluated over time to determine the best plan for their future.

Retirement

Animals that are domesticated or injured beyond release will retire comfortably at iRescue®. We meet every challenge to provide the best, most fulfilling life for each animal that enters into our retirement program. The goal with the animals that will retire at iRescue®’s Lazy J Wildlife Sanctuary is to provide the animals with the most natural environment with as much space as possible without putting these animals in any future danger. We do believe that bigger, more spacious enclosures are better and our designs prove that for themselves.
